The 2024 Medulloblastoma in the Mountains meeting, the 11th in the series across the globe

14 February 2024

The 2024 Medulloblastoma in the Mountains meeting, the 11th in the series across the globe, took place January 21-24, 2024, at North Lake Tahoe, California.  The 42 invited, leading researchers who participated traveled from Japan, China, Australia, Germany, France, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.

As always, the focus was on breaking translational research that will ultimately lead to improvements and cures in children and young adults with medulloblastoma.  Particular themes discussed over several talks were origins and molecular drivers of group 3 and 4 medulloblastoma, with opportunities for targeted intervention; the role of the immune system in medulloblastoma; and mechanisms of medulloblastoma metastasis.

Associate Professor Tomasz Nowakowski, PhD, from the University of California, San Francisco, gave the keynote lecture, “Developmental Strategies of Human Neural Stem Cells,” and provided consideration again to the origin of medulloblastoma at the level of glia and neurons.  There was also a clinical breakout session wherein investigators from North America and Europe/SIOP debated how to continue moving forward efficiently clinical trials for children with medulloblastoma while also flexing along the way to evolving biologic findings about medulloblastoma.

As always, in the hours between sessions, multiple impromptu, small group gatherings led to collaborative ideas and projects on everything from pooling of biologic specimens, sharing of labs’ expertise and techniques, clinical trials, to even screening for medulloblastoma.  The meeting continues to be an exemplar of collaborative brain tumor research around the world.
